The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
