Finest Television Selections: Seven Can't-Miss Motion Pictures This Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's daring critique examines the demanding standards for women's appearance along with the perceived horrors of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers an inspired acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, an aging film star reduced to starring in a fitness program on TV. Edged out by her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she seeks out a secretive and terrifying process known as "The Substance". This generates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a steadily more vampiric relationship between the two. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery features Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a break from covering world issues to board an opulent ship accompanied by an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her spouse, and other affluent passengers. However when a mysterious woman falls into the sea overnight and all passengers denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Available now, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities through this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly from the perspective of a ghost. As a family including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their recent residence, the camera – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The daughter appears sensing the supernatural presence, and the entity appears protective of her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor fully commits to his cult stardom through this self-referential adventure. He portrays an egotistical Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to visit a birthday party in Mallorca for billionaire superfan Javi. Hired by the CIA to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unique performing skills proves useful. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

The director's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has left the youth on edge. When Finney gets captured by the villain and locked up in a basement, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, nighttime, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. The actor portrays the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, yet Chastain achieves to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, late night, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

The current week's second offering from the filmmaker is a espionage tale as sharp like the turtlenecks sported by the actor's UK spy. He receives a mission with uncovering a mole within their ranks from a group of five – including is his own wife. The two stars excel of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
