RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
