The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
