Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
